Douaumont, France - May 17, 2014: The graves of French soldiers lie outside the Douaumont Ossuary, located on the Verdun battlefield in France. With 16,142 graves, it is the largest single French military cemetery of the First World War. It was inaugurated in 1923 by Verdun veteran Andre Maginot, who would later design the Maginot Line.

Douaumont, France - May 17, 2014: A group of German bikers visit the Douaumont ossuary, a memorial containing the remains of soldiers who died on the battlefield during the Battle of Verdun in World War I. It is located in Douaumont, France, within the Verdun battlefield. During the 300 days of the Battle of Verdun (21 February 1916 – 19 December 1916) at least 230,000 men died, though some estimates are much higher.

A stone memorial to remember those lost in one of the major battles of World War I primarily between the French and Germans from February through to December 1916m resulting in excess of 700,000 casualties for the 10 months of fighting.

Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, France - May 17, 2014: The graves of some of the 14,246 Americans buried at the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial in France. The cemetery, located east of the village of Romagne-sous-Montfaucon in Meuse, contains the largest number of American military dead in Europe, most of whom lost their lives during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive and were buried there.
