Cape May, New Jersey, USA - September 12, 2014: Birdwatchers and photographers view and photograph and extremely rare Whiskered Tern on the beach of Cape May New Jersey. The Whiskered Tern is normally found in Europe and Asia, but this one crossed the Atlantic Ocean to appear in the Cape May New Jersey area. This species of tern has only been verified three times in North America, and all three North American records are from Cape May, one in 1993, one in 1998 and and this one in September of 2014. Needless to say, this brought birders from far and wide to view and photograph this rare bird.

L 22-26cm, WS 56-62cm. commonest marsh tern, breeding in freshwater marshes with patches of low, floating vegetation, often among Black-headed Gulls for protection. Summer visitor (mainly late April-September), winters in Africa. This is a quite common Tern in the Netherlands in the described Habitats (Marsh area's). While the floating Habitats were disappearing (fields of Stratiotes) in the last decades, Nature Organizations have been experienced with artificial nests, with good results (see these Pictures).
