"Durham Cathedral is renowned as a masterpiece of Romanesque (or Norman) architecture. It was begun in 1093 and largely completed within 40 years. The Cathedral is built on a strategic peninsula of land created by a loop in the River Wear and its west end towers over a precipitous gorge. Together with its neighbour Durham Castle, the cathedral is now a World Heritage Site. The Old Fulling Mill next to a weir on the river, dates mostly from the 15th Century and played a key part of Durham's cloth-making industry. The knocker on the Cathedral’s northern door, known as the Sanctuary Knocker, played an important part in the Cathedral’s history. Those who ‘had committed a great offence,’ such as murder in self-defence or breaking out of prison, could rap the knocker, and would be given 37 days of sanctuary within which they could try to reconcile with their enemies or plan their escape.

Durham is a city in north east England. It is within the County Durham local government district, and is the county town of the larger ceremonial county. It lies to the south of Newcastle upon Tyne, Chester-le-Street and Sunderland and to the north of Darlington.

This impressive bronze is at the north entrance of the cathedral and is a near perfect replica of the twelfth century original which can be seen in the Treasury Museum. It represents the ancient privelege of sanctuary once granted to criminal offenders at Durham cathedral. Criminals could seek refuge at Durham by using the knocker. They would confess the details of his crime before a coroner and was allowed to remain inside the cathedral for a period of thirty seven days.
