Ethiopia: aerial view of Africa's Great Rift Valley - This tectonic fault stretches in Africa for about 3,000 kilometers in length from North to South, from Eritrea to Mozambique, passing through the great African lakes. It cuts the Horn of Africa in two: the Somali plate to the east moves away from the African plate to the west. The Great Rift Valley experiences intense volcanic activity, of great complexity that cannot be seen anywhere else.

View into the Rift Valley from the slopes of the mountain Ol Doinyo Lengai. This is an active vulcanoe in Northern Tanzania, between the Rift Valley escarpment (seen on the left) and Lake Natron (very right), close to the border beween Tanzania and Kenya. There is permanent vulcanic activity at the crater plateau. The Masai-tribe believes that this mountain is the home of their god "ngai".

View from the crater rim of Erta Ale - one of the most active vulancoes in the world - into the active, red glowing lava lake. Erta Ale is a continuously active basaltic shield volcano in the Afar Region of northeastern Ethiopia, only some kilometers from the border to Eritrea. The Afar Depression (or Danakil Depression) in the border-triangle between Ethiopia, Eritrea and Djibouti is one of the most remote and most extreme regions of the world - it is the lowest point in Africa (- 155 metres/-550 ft below sea level) and one of the hottest places on Earth. The Danakil/Afar Depression is the product of a tectonic triple junction, where the spreading ridges that form the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden emerge on land and meet the East African Rift. Here the Earth's crust is slowly rifting apart at a rate of 1–2 centimetres (0.3–0.8 in) per year. Erta ale is ond of the most dangerous places on earth - the lat major eruptions took place in September 2005, August 2007 and November 2008.

The volcanic explosion crater of Dallol in the Danakil Depresseion in Nothern Ethiopia. The Dallol crater was formed during a phreatic eruption in 1926. This crater is known as the lowest subaerial vulcanic vents in the world. The surreal colours are caused by green acid ponds and iron oxides and sulfur.

Aerial view of the salt pan and mineral crust with red algae of Lake Natron, in the Great Rift Valley, on the border between Kenya and Tanzania. The Rift Valley contains a chain of volcanoes, some of which are still active, and many other lakes such as the Magadi, Turkana, Baringo, Bogoria and Nakuru. During the dry season Lake Natron is partly covered by soda and is known for its wading birds. During the rainy season, a thin layer of brine covers much of the saline pan, but this evaporates leaving a vast expanse of white salt that cracks to produce large polygons. The lake is recharged by saline hot springs around its shores and is very rich in blue-green algae, which feed insects and massive flocks of lesser flamingos (Phoenicoparrus minor). Altogether it forms a very peculiar mineral and colour-rich landscape. The area is inhabited by the cattle-herder Masai tribes. Relics of many hominids have been found in the escarpments.
