Originally embedded in beige marls, they are most often released by erosion and give rise to 5 types of picturesque shapes: undulations, mounds, haystacks, cylinders and basins.

The village of Forcalquier is built around a hill, dominated by an octagonal chapel where the citadel stood in the 10th century. Forcalquier is located in the southwest corner of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, 30 km south of Sisteron and about 10 km west of the Durance river, and was the capital of the Haute-Provence in the Middle Ages. "Furnus calcarius" was its Latin name, from the lime ovens used in Roman times. This name was transformed into the Provençal "Fourcauquié".
