Pounamu or Greenstone are several types of hard and durable stone found in the South Island of New Zealand; such as Nephrite Jade, Bowenite, Serpentine, Argillite and Hydrogrossular Garnet. Pounamu is only found in the South Island of New Zealand giving the South Island its name "Te Wai Pounamu". A Greenstone (known as Pounamu by Kiwis and Maori alike) Pendant against a Lancewood flora background. This greenstone pendant was designed & carved by myself. It is an combination of typical Maori designs; the Double Twist and a Fish Hook. It also has a Silver Fern etched into the stone, a typical Kiwi symbol.

The Double Twist depicts two new shoots growing together. It represents the joining of cultures, the bonding of friendship for life, or the joining of two people in love or friendship for eternity.

The Fish Hook was an important resource for Maori, as the sea provided a rich source of food. In Maori mythology, New Zealand was fished up out of the sea by Maui.
