Highlands Hammock State Park has more rare and endemic species than any other Florida State Park. Trails can be hiked below towering oaks of a magnificent hydric hammock. With its beautiful old-growth hammock and variety of habitats and wildlife species, this is the Real Florida at its best. This photo was taken at what could be the highlight of the park, an elevated boardwalk through a cypress swamp.

This cypress tree at Highlands Hammock State Park has a clear line demarking the flood level after the 2022 hurricanes in Florida.
The picture shows a tranquil, swampy forest scene dominated by large cypress trees with their distinctive flared trunks, known as "knees," reflecting in the still waters beneath them. A fallen log lies half-submerged in the foreground, bridging the water, and provides a perch for a turtle. The dark water and the proliferation of trees create an almost mirror image of the trunks and branches. The forest floor is not visible, suggesting the water is fairly deep. The trees are largely bare, indicating it might be taken in a cooler season or these are deciduous cypresses that have shed their leaves. The light appears to be soft and diffused, with no harsh shadows, which could be due to an overcast sky or the picture being taken at a time when the sun is not directly shining on the scene.
