The Martyrdom of the Saint Ignatsius of Antioch in the Colosseum of Rome. Ignatius of Antioch (died c. 108/140 AD), was an early Christian writer and Patriarch of Antioch. While en route to Rome, where he met his martyrdom, Ignatius wrote a series of letters, which serve as an example of early Christian theology. Ælfheah 953 – 1012 aka Alphege, Anglo-Saxon Bishop of Winchester, later Archbishop of Canterbury. He became abbot of Bath Abbey. He was captured by Viking raiders in 1011 during the siege of Canterbury and killed by them the following year after refusing to allow himself to be ransomed. Ælfheah was canonised as a saint in 1078.
