Horse racing is an entertainment for the inhabitants of Buenos Aires. There are no horses trained for racing and the race is only half a mile. The skill of the jockey is unknown and no cheating occurs, except for throwing each other off the horse, but with such expert riders it is extremely difficult and seldom attempted. They ride without saddle, whip or spur and carry only a bridle without bit, so that the fierceness and speed of the animals legally resolves itself. The proportion of weight, according to the age of the horse, does not exist nor that the weights of the riders are equal, only that there is not a very notable disproportion and very often large sums of money are wagered. This race takes place on the beach road, north of the city, and the men in the foreground are the spectators, who are very numerous. On the left is a priest who is a strong gambler, next to him is a farmer, in festive costume. In the center are the competitors: there is a carter, or wagon foreman, and next to him at the back is a "gaucho", a country man. To the right a group of three spectators with their horses, they are two gauchos and a mestizo pawn, of one of the gauchos. All of them are armed with long knives, carried in sheaths in the belt or tucked into the boot, which come out at the slightest provocation.
