The Ijzertoren, (tower of iron) is the tallest World War I and peace memorial in Flanders, Belgium. In Diksmuide near Ypres along the Yser River. AVV-VVK stands for "Alles Voor Vlaanderen, Vlaanderen voor Kristus" (All for Flanders, Flanders for Christ.) The white characters at the bottom read "Never Again War" in two languages. This is the second tower, the first one bombed by Belgian reactionary forces shortly after WW2. The tower and its surrounding park celebrates the ongoing struggle for independence for Flanders. Students in the 1960s read the AVV-VVK differently: Alle Vlaamse Vrouwen, Vrijen Vele Keren (All Flemish Women make love many times.) Sacrilege for many.
