The picture was taken during the open free tour to visit the excavations of Pompeii given by the staff of Pompeii Sites: http://pompeiisites.org. The exact point was in the VII area. Please see the map: http://pompeiisites.org/wp-content/uploads/Pompeiweb2023.pdf After being erased from the map by the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., the city of Pompeii was rediscovered during the construction of the Sarno channel in 1592. This image captures the main entrance of a wealthy house in ancient Pompeii. The mosaic painting served as their way of conveying a warning, akin to our modern-day dog signs. Instead of using words, they communicated the message through art.

Pompeii is a ruined and partially buried Roman town-city near modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania, in the territory of the comune of Pompei. Along with Herculaneum, its sister city, Pompeii was destroyed, and completely buried, during a long catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius spanning two days in AD 79.
