The insulin receptor (violet) is a transmembrane protein, that is activated by insulin (light green). Insulin binding induces structural changes within the receptor. These changes trigger a biochemical chain of events inside the cell, (signal transduction) that finally leads to the activation of the glucose transporter protein (orange), which transports the glucose (yellow) molecules into the cell.

Inactive Ras protein (left) is activated by a GEF protein opening the binding site allowing GDP to exit. Afterwards GTP can bind to RAS turning it into the active form. Activated Ras proteins are involved in growth regulation processes. Mutated Ras proteins can induce cancer.

Insulin is a protein hormone that regulates the metabolism of carbohydrates and fats through the assimilation of glucose from the blood in the skeletal muscles and fat tissue. Dsplay styles: ball and stick, ribbon, line and molecular surface . Source; PDB entry 3I40.

Glucose and insulin are two critical molecules in the bloodstream, each playing a distinct role in regulating blood sugar levels. The interaction between glucose and insulin is crucial for maintaining blood sugar homeostasis. When glucose levels rise, the pancreas releases insulin to help cells absorb and use glucose for energy, preventing blood sugar from becoming too high. When glucose levels fall, the pancreas reduces insulin production, allowing the liver to release stored glucose into the bloodstream.
