Early in his reign, Great Britain defeated France in the Seven Years' War, becoming the dominant European power in North America and India. However, many of its American colonies were soon lost in the American War of Independence, which led to the establishment of the United States of America. A series of wars against revolutionary and Napoleonic France, over a 20-year period, finally concluded in the defeat of Napoleon in 1815."

From “The Cottager and Artisan: The People’s Own Paper” illustrated by various artists and published by The Religious Tract Society, London, in 1896.
The arrest of a group of plotters who planned to assassinate King George III. The ‘Despard plotters’ - revolutionaries - were Colonel Edward Marcus Despard, John Francis, John Wood, Thomas Broughton, James Sedgwick Wratton, Arthur Graham and John MacNamara and they were all executed for High Treason, being hanged, drawn and quartered - the last time that sentence was received in England. The execution, in 1803, was attended by a crowd of at least 20,000 spectators.

George III (1738 – 1820) was King of Great Britain and of Ireland from 25 October 1760 until the union of these two countries. From the 1 January 1801, he was King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. This engraving is from a work published by John Tallis, an English cartographer, in about 1850. It includes a scroll with the words 'Union with Ireland 1801', and a cartouche of a small scene that carries the caption 'Attempt to shoot the King in Hyde Park'. At the foot of the engraving are the captions 'George III' and 'From the original painting by A. Ramsay'.
