Description
The Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Auricola or also the Sanctuary of the Madonna dell’Auricola stands on the top of the hill of the same name, 270 meters above sea level and a few kilometers from the center of Amaseno. According to historical data and some artifacts found in 1896 it can be deduced that the construction of the sanctuary can be traced back to the early 13th century by the Benedictine monks. In 1897, during the restoration, an abbey seal was discovered on which both the figure of an abbot and an inscription that read: "Nicolaus Abbas Sce Marie De Auricola" was engraved. The writing with semi-Gothic characters of the writing only further supports the hypothesis, now accredited, that the Sanctuary was built at the beginning of the 13th century.
