Description
East exit of Zion National Park / past the Canyon overlook Trail -near and around Checkerboard Mesa : This famous formation was originally named so by Preston P. Patrow, the 3rd superintendent of Zion. Standing at 6,670 feet, it was named for its checkerboard appearance caused by th horizontal cross-bedding of ancient sand dunes and vertical cracking due to expansion and contraction of the sandstone during winter. The unusual crack pattern in the sandstone hills resemble a grid much like you would see on a checkerboard. Desert Bighorn, perfectly adapted to survive in severe desert climate are seen between Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel & East Entrance.
