Church of St Mary & All Saints in Chesterfield, England stock photo

Church of St Mary & All Saints in Chesterfield, England From Knifesmithgate, the largest church in Derbyshire can be seen. It was built in the 14th century and the famous 'crooked spire' was added in about 1362. Although it was at first thought the spire was twisted owing to the lack of skilled craftsmen after the recent Black Death or Bubonic plague, it's now thought the twist is the result of the lead which covers the spire. Sun shining on the south side in the day causes that side to heat up and expand at a faster rate than the north side, leading to unbalanced expansion and contraction. Ancient Stock Photo
