Description
Glen Canyon Dam towers 710 feet above the Colorado River, creating Lake Powell — the nation’s second-largest reservoir. Construction began in 1956 and took seven years to complete, using more than 10 million tons of concrete to contain the powerful river. Built by the Bureau of Reclamation to provide water storage and hydroelectric power for the growing Southwest, the dam also inundated the red-rock canyons of Glen Canyon, sparking one of the most enduring environmental controversies in American history. Glen Canyon Dam is near Page, Arizona, USA.
