Description
Humpback whale breaching in Frederick Sound Alaska. With a couple pumps of their powerful flukes these large mammals can power themselves up out of the water. The whale is exhaling through it’s blowhole as it leaves the water. This is image 1 of a series of nine sequential shots of the same breach. At this point about 20 feet of the marine mammal is out of the ocean. These humpbacks are baleen whales which feed on herring and krill during the summer in Alaska. They migrate to the Hawaiian islands in winter to mate and give birth to their young.
