Description
"The amphitheatre viewed from one of the archways within the diazoma. Founded by the Greeks around the 7th century B.C. but later developed by the Romans in the early centuries A.D., Side was an important port city of ancient Pamphylia, Asia Minor. Built in the 2nd century A.D. on Hellenistic foundations the Side amphitheatre was the largest in Pamphylia and is unusual in that the upper tiers of seats are supported by an arched sub-structure rather than being built into the side of a hill. Dividing the seating into two groups of 29 rows, the diazoma featured archways that provided access via stairs to the ground level."
