Description
The Timișoara Orthodox Cathedral, also called the Metropolitan Cathedral (in Romanian Catedrala Ortodoxă din Timișoara or Catedrala Mitropolitană) is the largest religious building in Timișoara and the cathedral of the Banat Metropolis. Its patrons are the "Three Hierarchs" (Basilio el Grande, Gregorio Nacianceno and Juan Crisóstomo). It was built between 1936 and 1940 and is one of the main emblems of the city. History The history of the building is related to the key moment in the year 1919 when, on July 28, Banat joined Romania. The new Romanian administration takes up the thread of orthodoxy broken in 1717 and takes a series of measures to encourage orthodoxy, disadvantaged by the Austrian administration, since it professed the Catholic religion. Thus, in 1926, the services of the old parish of the Fortress resumed, then, in 1939, those of the Bishopric of Timișoara elevated to the rank of archbishopric, and in 1947 the Banat Metropolis was created again.
