The Baptism Site of Jesus Christ is recorded in the biblical gospels as being located in Bethany Beyond the Jordan on the eastern bank of the Jordan River in what is modern-day Jordan. Excavations have revealed the remains of five churches that were built since the 5th century as memorials to Jesus' baptism. The 6th-century mosaic map discovered in Madaba, Jordan – the oldest surviving original cartographic depiction of the Holy Land – also verifies the authenticity of this site. UNESCO appointed the Baptism Site as a World Heritage Site in 2001.
