This former mining town was abandoned in 1938 after a majority of the copper and other ore was depleted. Kennicott was the center of 5 mines in the area and a booming town in it's day. It later became a tourist attration and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986. Now the National Park Service is attempting to restore a majority of the buildings and offers tours of the town.
