In addition, the Pantheon is also a Catholic church consecrated in 609 AD by Pope Bonficio IV and called the Basilica of Santa Maria ad Martyres. Within its perimeter some members of the Italian royal family and famous artists are buried, including the painter Raphael, a great protagonist of Renaissance art. The dome of the Pantheon, built in concrete and brick, is a masterpiece of engineering and the prototype of all the domes subsequently built in Christian churches in Europe. With a diameter of 43.44 meters, it is still the largest dome in the world today. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
