In the past, as its name suggests, the area was devoted largely to distilling spirits. Years ago, with the distillery business in sharp decline, the area was redeveloped into shops, restaurants, bars, theatres, galleries etc. It brought together residential condos/apartments, and commercial enterprises into high end developments. The area is now a tourist destination.
