Capital letter A and B woodcut 16th century by Holbein illustration Hans Holbein the Younger ( c. 1497 – between 7 October and 29 November 1543 ) was a German-Swiss artist, painter and printmaker. He is best known for the portraits he painted..
Holbein's dance of death alphabet was first used in August 1524 - The woodcutter was Hans Lützelburger. As always with Roman majuscules there are 24 letters.
A
Bones of all men
The dance is introduced with drums and trumpets. It's not hard to see where Holbein found the inspiration - since he lived in Basel at the time, and both of Basel's dances of death start in a similar way

B
The Pope
The pope with the triple crown is dragged away by two deaths. The fact that the pope is about to die like everybody else is not so extraordinary in itself, but the little devil shows clearly that the pope is in for a long travel in the downward direction.
