Frederick was the last King of Saxony (1904–1918). Though well-loved by his subjects, he voluntarily abdicated as king on 13 November 1918, after the defeat of the German Empire in World War I. Archduchess Louise of Austria (1870 - 1947,) was by marriage Crown Princess of Saxony as the wife of the future King Frederick Augustus III. Her dissatisfaction at the Saxon court and extramarital affairs caused the mother of five to leave Dresden and flee to Geneva. The Saxon king dissolved their union in 1903. The escape of the Crown Princess was the first scandal of the German nobility in the 20th century and was heavily publicised by the press.
