Description
The Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas) is a large sea turtle that is known for its olive-brown shell, or carapace, and its white or yellowish underbelly. They are a common sight in tropical and subtropical waters, particularly around coral reefs and seagrass beds. Green turtles are herbivores, feeding mainly on seagrass and algae. They are also known for their long migrations, traveling thousands of miles to reach their nesting beaches. Unfortunately, these turtles are threatened by habitat loss, pollution, hunting, and accidental capture in fishing nets. Conservation efforts, such as protected nesting areas and regulations on fishing practices, have helped to stabilize their populations in some areas.
