Description
This is a generic image of a shrimp farm multi horsepower water aerator. This type of farming is a marine aquaculture industry to grow shrimps and prawns for the food industry. These farms are vast throughout Southeast Asia, with 75% of the worlds prawn and shrimp supply come from Thailand and China. The main species grown are Penaeus vannamei (Pacific white shrimp) and Penaeus monodon (giant tiger prawn). These farms are known to be one of the main causes of Mangrove habitat loss and environmental destruction. The farms are highly susceptible to disease therefore antibiotic and fertilisers are routinely used. After several years pollution levels build up to unsafe levels. They are then abandoned and new locations sought. The location is Ko Lanta, Krabi, Thailand.
