"Panorama of a busy Trafalgar Square taken from an elevated position on a sunny day. As well as Nelson's column you can see one of the 19th Century fountains, the National Gallery and St. Martin-in-the-Fields church. The column was built to commemorate the death of Admiral Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The square is a busy tourist attraction, a venue for events and a popular focal point for political demonstrations."

It was designed by William Railton and completed in 1843 as a memorial in honour of Admiral Horatio Nelson, who died at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. He commanded the British Royal Navy at the battle against the combined forces of the Spanish and French navy.

Trafalgar Square in the City of Westminster, Central London, laid out in the early 19th century. In 1838 a Nelson Memorial Committee approached the government proposing a monument to the victory of Trafalgar. A competition proposed a 218-foot-3-inch Corinthinan column topped by a statue of Nelson and guarded by four sculpted lions.

The tomb of Admiral Nelson lies at the center of the crypt at St. Paul's Cathedral, directly beneath the middle of the Dome. His monument includes a call to national prayer that he wrote while in view of the enemy before the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. There are memorials for several prominent people, national heroes in the church crypt.
