Fossicking for Pounamu or Greenstone is a both a cultural and Kiwi activity in New Zealand. Pounamu or Greenstone are several types of hard and durable stone found in the South Island of New Zealand; such as Nephrite Jade, Bowenite, Serpentine, Argillite and Hydrogrossular Garnet.
Pounamu is only found in the South Island of New Zealand giving the South Island its name "Te Wai Pounamu". From the West Coast to the bottom of the South Island, Pounamu may only be fossicked for on the beach; but Bowenite, Serpentine, Hydrogrossular Garnet and Argillite are also found in the Nelson and Tasman Regions of the South Island.
