Detail of the Nea Moni monastery on the Greek Island of Chios captured on old-fashioned analog (or analogue) grainy (ISO 400) black and white film. The Nea Moni (New Monastery) is situated on the mountain of Provateio Oros on the Greek Island of Chios in the Aegean Sea, 15 km from Chios Town (Hora). It is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It was built in the mid-11th century by the Byzantine emperor Constantine IX on the spot where legend holds that three monks fond an icon of the Virgin Mary. At its peak around 1300, 800 monks and one third of the land of Chios belonged to the monastery. Buildings and inventory suffered after the Turkish massacre in 1822 and a massive earthquake in 1881 marking the decline of the monastery. The image is part of a series of black and white analogue film images of Chios.
