The Sooty Grouse (Dendragapus fuliginosus) lives in the forests of North America's Pacific Coast mountain ranges from southeast Alaska and Yukon to California. Adult males are dark with a yellow air sac on the throat surrounded by white. Adult females are mottled brown with dark brown and white marks on the underparts. The sooty grouse is a permanent resident in its range but may move short distances by foot or flight in winter. The sooty grouse’s diet consists of conifer needles for which they forage on the ground as well as other green plants and insects.
