The Hambach open pit mine is the largest open pit mine operated by RWE Power AG in the Rhenish lignite mining region and the largest lignite mine in Europe, with an operating area of 4,380 hectares (2017) and an approved maximum mining area size of 8,500 hectares. In 2011, an estimated 1,772 million tons of lignite were available for mining, and about 40 million tons of lignite were produced annually
