Outside the Hayward Gallery, off the South Bank Centre, is a huge straw 'urban fox' named Susan. It is one of several installations for the Festival of Britain 60th anniversary celebrations, which stretch from April 24 to September 4, 2011, on the South Bank next to the River Thames. The festival celebration includes a museum that chronicles the original Festival of Britain, and event that heralded Britain's emergence from the Second World War. The large building on the other side of the Thames is Shell Mex House, now correctly known as simply 80 Strand.

The QEH and the Purcell Room were completed in the late 1960s and built in concrete in an architectural style known as 'brutalism'; they reopened to the public in April 2018 after being completely refurbished and updated.
