Copenhagen, Denmark - June 23. 2019: Sct Hans celebration at the the Nature Center, at Kalvebod Fælled, a large nature area in the Ørestad region, Copenhagen. Usually the celebration is at sunset, but the Center promoted a celebration to include children having the bonfire lit at 7 PM instead of 11 PM.
Families enjoyed with picnic the good weather and the possibility to have kids at the celebration.
The event was inspired on the fairytale “Tinderbox”, by the Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen
In Denmark the Midsummer celebration is known as Saint Hans (Saint John’s) Evening, is based on a pagan tradition of the solstice celebration. The Tradition in Denmark and other Northern European Countries is to place a figure representing a witch inside the traditional bonfire, with fireworks to make it sound like screams.
