Karakum Desert north of Darvaza / Derweze, Dashoguz Province, Turkmenistan: nocturnal view of Darvaza gas crater, also known as the Door to Hell or Gates of Hell. Looking down at a ring of fire, a flaming sinkhole in a natural gas field, the result of a collapsed cavern during a drilling operation. It it has been burning continuously since it was set alight by Soviet geologists in 1971. Located just north of the border with Ahal Province. Turkmenistan holds the world's 4th largest natural gas reserves.

The Gates of Hell, at Derweze, Turkmenistan. In the Turkmenistan desert is an old Soviet Gas Facility which collapsed due to subsidence. The Soviet's set the emitting gas on fire hoping it would burn itself out. That was nearly 50 years ago, and it still burns today, creating a beacon of light that can be seen from miles around.

Darvaza Gas Crater, The Gate of Hell, or Door to Hell. In the middle of the Karakum Desert, Central Turkmenistan, Central Asia. Sits above the largest natural gas reserve in the world. The crater was created by the collapse of drilling equipment onto an underground cave, and the gas was set on fire in 1971. It's still burning. It is now the prime tourist destination in Turkmenistan.

The scorched terrain is a habitat for extremophilic microorganisms that can survive at high temperatures.

Derweze or Darvaza, aka the Door to Hell is a huge crater of burning natural gas in the Kara-kum desert in Turkmenistan.
