Hovenweep National Monument contains six separate prehistoric ruined villages dating from the Pueblo period of the mid thirteenth century.

Hovenweep Castle in Hovenweep National Monunment. It is believed to have been a defensive structure and a home, as well as a solar observatory. It was built on top of Dakota Sandstone at the edge of a small, spring-fed canyon that contains similar Anasazi structures. Dating of the tree rings used in the construction of the castle shows the main part to have been completed in 1166 with the solar observatory 'sun-room' (the square room to the right of the round tower) added in 1277.
