Pyongyang, North Korea – July 27, 2011: The Kim Il-Sung Square is named after the founding leader of the DPRK. It opened in August 1954. The square is located on the west bank of the Taedong River, directly opposite of the Juche Tower. The square is the common gathering place for North Korea's massive military parades. The marks on the ground serve to position the soldiers and units during these parades.

A huge statue of a seated Kim Il Sung dominates the entrance hall of the Grand People's Study Hall. The Grand People's Study House is the central library located on Kim Il-sung Square by the banks of the Taedong River. The Study House was constructed in a traditional Korean style in April 1982 to celebrate leader Kim Il-sung's 70th birthday. The library was opened as the "centre for the project of intellectualising the whole of society and a sanctuary of learning for the entire people."
