Essaouira / Mogador, Marrakesh-Safi, Morocco: Slat Lkahal Synagogue (Synagogue of the Community) is located in the historic Mellah district (Jewish quarter). Constructed circa 1850 using funds raised by the local Jewish community, the structure served as a central place of worship for the city's Sephardic population, largely composed of the Megorashim, descendants of Jews from Spain and Portugal. The image features the wooden Torah ark (Hechal), draped with a blue velvet parochet (curtain) embroidered with Hebrew dedication inscriptions. Unlike the private family synagogues of the city's wealthy merchants, Slat Lkahal was a public institution known as the "Synagogue of the Poor." The architecture reflects traditional Moroccan craftsmanship with carved wood elements and memorial lamps.
