A Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos) singing in a bush at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area in Riverside County, Southern California. The Northern Mockingbird is a member of a small New World family (Mimidae) of about 30 species, including other mockingbirds, thrashers, catbirds, and tremblers. This bird is common and widespread and ranges from the mid United States to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Mexico. As the scientific name implies (Mimus polyglottos= “many-tongued mimic”), the Northern Mockingbird is an extremely accomplished repeater of practically any sound that it hears, whether it be another bird or mechanical noises.

Northern mockingbirds are medium-sized songbirds with gray to brown body coloration and a lighter underbelly. Their wings are rounded with white patches on the upper and lower surfaces, which are visible when the wings are outstretched.

The Blue Mockingbird (Melanotis caerulescens) is endemic to mainly west Mexico north of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This individual was photographed in the foothills south of Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico. Contrary to the Northern Mockingbird, the Blue Mockingbird is a skulker, keeping well hidden in the undergrowth most of the time. Its song is extremely varied, with sweet phrases and harsh noises, changing from day to day. The sexes are alike.
