Short to medium, erect to rather sprawling, hairless, branched annual. Leaves lanceolate, tapered at the base, often with a large blackish blotch; ochrea brown, shortly fringed. Habitat: Waste, bare and cultivated land, railway embankments, often close to water especially along rivers, streams and canals, sometimes abundant on heavy non-calcareous soils. Flowering Season: June-October. Distribution: Throughout Europe, except Spitsbergen. This is a common Species in the Netherlands.

Persicaria capitata is a perennial groundcover with an infinite spread. It has a dense mat-forming habit spreading by creeping stems. Primary bloom period is late summer to fall with pink flowers gradually fading into white color. The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a medicine - it has proved very effective in treating urinary tract infections and is widely used in China. It is often cultivated as an ornamental.
