The Plaza de España is a large garden space in the city of Madrid located in the Argüelles neighborhood, in the extreme southeast of the Moncloa-Aravaca district. In its center is a monumental fountain dedicated to Miguel de Cervantes. It acts as a continuation axis joining the Gran Vía with the Calle de la Princesa.

Madrid, Spain - June 21, 2014: The Edificio España (Spanish: Spain Building) is one of the tallest buildings in Madrid, Spain. With 25 stories and a height of 117 m (384 ft), it is the 14th tallest building of the Spanish capital, It was designed by architect Julián Otamendi and his brother, engineer Joaquín Otamendi in the Neo-baroque style and constructed from 1948 to 1953. It was the tallest building in Spain until overtaken by the Torre de Madrid in 1957. The building formerly contained a Crowne Plaza Hotel, a shopping centre, apartments, offices, and a rooftop swimming pool.Since its sale in 2005, it has been vacant awaiting renovation into luxury residences.

The project restored the Plaza de España as a civic and active place to stay; it reduced motorized traffic and increased pedestrian spaces; it increased the spatial continuity between the square and its surroundings and connected the green areas of the square, especially with the Plaza de Oriente, the Sabatini Gardens, the Parque del Oeste and the Temple of Debod as well as with Madrid Río. The main objective of the project was to restore the continuity of these magnificent public spaces. In addition, it guaranteed universal accessibility and environmental improvement through the protection and increase of vegetation, and coordination with sustainable mobility systems.
