Beetween the two islands just North of Komodo Island, Gili Lawa Laut and Gili Lawa Barat, there is a narrow passage with a really, but really strong current. As a photographer, you have just some seconds to take a photo, and boom -- you are washed to the other side! Hard for divers, easy for fishes, they hang around there easily! The amout of fish in amount and species is stunning. Red Snapper Lutjanus bohar, Giant Trevally Caranx ignobilis, Bigeye Trevally Caranx sexfasciatus, Lowfin Drummer Kyphosus vaigiensis, Topsail Drummer Kyphosus cinerascens, One Spot Snapper Lutjanus monostigma, Humpnose Bigeye Bream Monotaxis grandoculis. A large Ellisella Whip Coral dominates the scenery. Golden Damsels Amblyglyphidodon aureus and Ternate Chromis Chromis ternatensis find shelter in and around the coral. There is very large Sponge Petrosia hoeksemai near the whip coral. Even if the shape is very different from Giant Barrel Sponge Xestospongia testudinaria (there is one to see behind the whip coral at the seascape horizon), the two species are closely related. Humpback Red Snapper Lutjanus gibbus occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean in a depth range from 1-150m, max. length 50cm, common 45cm. Adults mainly inhabit coral reefs, sometimes like these specimens forming large aggregations, which are mostly stationary during the day. It is not easy to approach a school of Humpback Red Snapper Lutjanus gibbus, as this species has a well-spaced escape distance. By some reason that was a lucky day! Just one Red Snapper Lutjanus bohar at the right side. Blue Corner, Palau, Micronesia, 7°8'4.919" N 134°13'15.52" E at 8m depth

Bigeye Trevally Caranx sexfasciatus occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific in a depth range from 1-146m, common length 60cm, max. 120cm. A lot of fish species are more difficult to approach. Caranx sexfasciatus has a moderate escape distance. The species forms slow-moving schools during the day, dispersing at night feed, mainly on fish and crustaceans. There are some Red Snappers Lutjanus bohar inbetween these trevallies.
