At the base of an ancient sinkhole, a metal building protects the archaeological Vore Buffalo Jump site. A large, permanent teepee museum overlooks the rim. Thousands of bison bones and stone tools are exposed at the Vore Bison Jump archaeological site, a natural sinkhole located on the grasslands near Wyoming's Black Hills used by the Plains Indians to trap herds of bison between 1500 A.D. and 1800 A.D. Prior to the arrival of European horses, hunting bison was difficult and dangerous, so as winter approached, tribes often joined in communal hunts to drive herds of buffalo over the hidden cliff which would provide food, clothing, shelter, tools, toys an much more for the people.
