The dorsal wing surface is jet black but has three prominent spots, two on the forewing and one on the hindwing. To a human observer, these spots appear as white spots bordered with a blue-purple colour. These spots actually consist of a white centre covered by bright ultraviolet iridescence, a colour produced by nanostructures on the surface of the wing scales. There are many smaller white spots on the margins of the fore and hind wings. The ventral surface lacks ultraviolet iridescence and consists essentially of banded white markings on a brownish background. Females are highly variable due to genetic polymorphism and phenotypic plasticity. Polymorphism is expressed mainly on the dorsal surface, with morphs varying in the presence of white, orange, and blue markings, one genetic morph, named euploeoides by Clarke & Sheppard (1975),[4] is thought to mimic one or more members of the genus Euploea.
