Dumbarton was as a center for shipbuilding, glassmaking, and whisky production, however these industries have since declined, and Dumbarton today is a commuter town for Glasgow located 13 miles east-southeast.

Cannons pointed towards the town of Dumbarton at the Dumbarton Castle, a medieval Scottish stronghold built on a plug of volcanic basalt occupied since the Iron Age. Not much survives from the medieval castle, being the existing structures built in the 18th century, but it is open to the public for stunning views.
