The fruit of a horse chestnut tree is the chestnut-coloured 'conker', which gave rise to the game of 'conkers' in the UK. A conker starts its life inside a prickly green casing, and here is an example as the seed case, still on the tree, has just split.

Ohio Buckeyes (Aesculus glabra) that have fallen under a tree. The Ohio Buckeye is also known as the American Buckeye, Fetid Buckeye and Stinking Buckeye. The latter two names come from the fact that the crushed twigs, and leaves stink. The name “Buckeye,” came from Native Americans who noticed that the brown seeds with the lighter spot looked similar to the eye of a male (buck) deer. Fruits of Ohio Buckeye usually contain one seed (or nut) enclosed in a slightly spiny, golden-brown husk. The brown husked fruit are also known as “conkers” because they conk you on the head if they fall and hit you. They are also sometimes called Horse-Chestnuts, even though the Horse-Chestnuts are in a separate scientific genus (hippocastanum).
