Tsuga heterophylla, the western hemlock, is a species of hemlock native to the west coast of North America, with its northwestern limit on the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, and its southeastern limit in northern Sonoma County, California. Western hemlock forms ectomycorrhizal associations with some well-known edible fungi such as chanterelles (Cantharellus formosus, C. subalbidus, and Craterellus tubaeformis.

(Adelges tsugae) The Woolly Adelgids is considered an invasive species from Japan. It sucks the sap out of Western hemlock and spruce trees. The white seen in the picture is actually the egg sacs. The insect adorns itself with waxy filaments that look like cotton. There are 22 species of this insect in North America, and 17 species in the Pacific Northwest.
