La Gran Sabana, spreads into the regions of the Guiana Highlands and south-east into Bolívar State all the way to the borders with Brazil and Guyana. La Gran Sabana has an area of 10,820 km2 and is part of the second largest National Park in Venezuela, the Canaima National Park. The average temperature is around 20 °C , but at night can drop to 13 °C, nevertheless on top of the tepuis it can reach 0 °C (32 °F). La Gran Sabana shows one of the most unusual landscapes in the world, with rivers, waterfalls, deep and huge valleys, impenetrable jungles and savannahs that host large numbers and varieties of plant and animal species. The most prominent geological features are the table top mountains known as tepuis.

Palma moriche or moriche palm also known as Mauritia flexuosa is a tropical tree which can reach up to 10 m in height. The large leaves form a rounded crown and it is used by venezuelan indigenous people to build hut roofs all over the country. The flowers are yellowish, appear from December to April and the fruit is edible with chestnut color. The seeds float, and this is the means by which the palm tree propagates. In natural populations the tree reaches very high densities. Morichal palms are located all over La Gran Sabana and Los LLanos in Venezuela
